THE IMPORTANCE OF CANTONESE

Cantonese is a 2000-year old language that is the major language of South China in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi, of Hong Kong, and of Macau as well as one of the common dialects in most overseas Chinese communities throughout the world. This global presence reflects over 150 years of emigration from South China. Internationally, there are now between 75 and 100 million Cantonese speakers in the world, nearly equivalent to global speakers of German and Italian combined. Cantonese was primarily an oral language. However, it was standardized with the Chinese writing system during the Chin dynasty. Chinese characters actually are shared by all Chinese dialects today. Students at GPCA learn to speak Cantonese and apply it in various situations; they also practice reading and writing in Chinese.
